What is PAINT THE LIBRARY 2012!
This is a Juried event wherein a group of wonderfully diverse artists will spend one day capturing in their unique style en plein air the beautiful 1915 Beaux Arts style Mirror Lake Library and its grounds.
“En plein air” is a French expression which means “in the open air,” and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. The goal of plein-air painting is to capture the light and colors peculiar to the place. Some artists create a very colorful and abstract interpretation of their subjects, while others work toward a more realistic treatment. Our event embraces traditional as well as non-traditional works, allowing any appropriate artwork created between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. in oils, acrylics, watercolors or pastels to be submitted for exhibition and judging.
The Festival is open to any artist 15 years of age and older (Artists younger than 18 must have a parent or guardian present during Festival). The Festival will award $1000 in prize money for 3 purchase awards.
There will be two historical lectures given at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the main Carnegie library building about the library and the surrounding Mirror Lake area, pioneer St. Petersburg's first cultural hub.
We have also put together a list of the library's current art collection, and you're encouraged to come inside and enjoy finding the pictures on our Art Exhibit sheet.
Immediately following the painting period there will be a lovely Exhibition & Sales Reception during which the judging will occur, and patrons will most definitely find that special little picture they need to go home with. From the incredibly rich diverse pool of artists, you will see a remarkable display of very unique perspectives on one of the city's cultural icons.
This event is a charitable fund raiser produced by the Friends of Mirror Lake Library, Inc. (“Friends”), whose mission is to provide support and assistance to the library, to introduce people to the library or get them to reconnect to an old friend. The Friends is a Florida not-for-profit corporation registered as a charitable organization with the State of Florida's Division of Consumer Services, and may lawfully solicit donations under Florida law.
